The automotive, aerospace and construction industries increasingly are shifting to the use of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) to deliver lighter, stronger and more fuel-efficient products. The advantages of these lighter and stronger materials also have made their way into several other industries.
However, the very properties that make AHSS desirable—high tensile and yield strength—can present significant challenges in manufacturing processes, including CNC punching. Successful punching of AHSS requires a shift from traditional methods, leveraging specific practices in tooling design and material selection, and strategic wear-reduction techniques.
